Negombo

Negombo is a beautiful beach resort on the western coast of Sri Lanka, just a short drive north of Colombo. As it also very close to the airport, Negombo is a convenient place to either begin or end your trip to Sri Lanka. You can relax on beautiful beaches,view incredible sunsets and enjoy western and Sri Lankan food. Sea food is very popular and is caught fresh daily by Negombo fishermen.
       Visit a fishing village and the busting early-morning fish action as the catamarans come ashore with their bounty of fresh seafood.

Negombo situated by the shores of a lagoon by the same name once has been a trading port for protégées and Dutch and is a ideal place for those who want quick access to and from the airport.
          During the Dutch Period (1657-1796AD) Bolgoda Lake was extensively used by the Dutch to ferry people and goods from the upper stream of Kalu Ganga, particularly, from Rathnapura District. The lake was utilized as a very popular mode of transport for timber from sinharaja forest areas, by log crafts. There are several islands on the lake which were the resting places for these log craftsmen floated from the upper reaches of the river leading for many timber mills of Moratuwa.

      During the British Period, Bolgoda lake was a famous hunting ground and place of recreation for the British adventurists who were stationed in the Colombo city.

      It is situated in western province. It is belong to Colombo and kalutara districts.

  Bolgod Lake

      The Bolgod Lake opens in to the sea via the panadura estuary, which is situated in the southwest coast of Sri Lanka.

      The distance to the Bolgoda Lake from Colombo is 35 Km approximately. By car it takes 45 minutes from the Colombo city. Extent of the Bolgoda Lake is 400sq.Km

      Very interesting reptiles are found in Bolgoda Lake. There is a fair number of endemic reptiles (7) are found in Bolgoda Lake.

      The area offers a bewildering array of microhabitats for amphibians. Approximately 1/3 of the total known species of the Sri Lankan Amphibians can be found in Bolgoda Lake.

      The high numbers of migrants and water birds are the major factors the enhance the richness of the avifauna. The three endemic birds can be found in Bolgoda Lake. There fore this area can be easily called a haven for water-loving avians.

      Bolgoda lake area is also developing into tourists (Local and Foreign) recreational site, mainly for boating, water skinning and wind surfing. Over the past decade, many new hotels, guest houses and restaurants have been established. Many of the lager guest houses and hotels trying to improve their water sports facilities, witch they see as a good revenue – generation source.
      Bolgoda Lake is a traditional fishing ground for centuries. there are so many popular varieties of fish can be found in Bolgoda Lake. There is no prohibition for fishing in Bolgoda Lake.

      Mainly, fishing is done by angling. Also fisherman in Bolgoda Lake still use very primitive fishing technique called “ja-kotuwa” for fishing. “ja-kotuwa” was made with bamboo bamboo dividers erected in the moddle of the lake, is a kind of trap , which is illuminated with kerosene oil bottle lamps in the night.

      Colombo yacht club is located at the bunds of Bolgoda Lake. The aim of the yatch club is to promote water sports in Bolgoda Lake. Also hotels around the Bolgoda Lake offer water sports facilities. They are boating, wind-surfing, water skiing, sailing, speed boating and rowing. The resorts have paddle boats, and pontoons with cad Jan roofs. There are also boats with outboard motors. But most of the visitors that come ask for paddle boats or the pontoons. These crafts appear to mix ideally with the surroundings. Visitors may also like in a riverbath in the traditional Sri Lankan way bathing at “pokuna” which is found to be safe.
